Walls of HEAVY, droning guitars build on these songs with electronic flickers in the background and Chelseas amazing voice, guiding you along.

Swirling guitars, bells, and an almost siren like affect, make the chorus of "Dragged Out" sound truly epic. Other highlights for me are the subtle, minimal, "Survive" and the creepy, closing title track.

This is not an album for a sunny weekend drive, its not background music for when you clean house. This a dark, brooding, depressing, record, but also at times a delicate and beautiful record.

One filled with great performances and songwriting. This is art. A masterpiece. This album is even better than her last release "Pain Is Beauty".

Chelsea has evolved deeper into the macabre and brooding to further drag us into her other-worldly darkness. This album flows seamlessly and transports you to another realm where bewitching dreams can shadow the light of reality.

I find myself in a sublime trance listening to her. She has become consistently stronger with every release. I would recommend this to any lover of gothic or industrial music.

Thank you for revealing to us the most beguiling, ominous and alluring layers of your soul. The music is great.

The rating is for the LP format. I have had two copies, and returned both. They had the same defects: 1 scratchy static, 2 warped vinyl, 3 strange dimples in vinyl on A side as if too little vinyl was used in the pressing.

In addition, the second LP was not centered, and the replacement had one broken inner sleeve. In summary, a sloppy, careless vinyl production of a really interesting artist.

Avoid this format from this record producer. LP typically sounds better, but unfortunately not for this record. I hope the CD makes justice to the music.

Freud identified anxiety as the great unifier of the human experience. It's ubiquitous, and it lashes out at everyone equally.

It's the predator and the way that we live out our days is its prey. On 'Abyss', Chelsea Wolfe animates this tension to the point that her songs are possessing the suspense of Ripley Sigourney Weaver in the film 'Alien' fleeing a monster that anticipated her every move.

Ripley had no super powers to fight the beast. In Ms. Wolfe's most tightly integrated, disciplined and relatable work to date, 'Abyss' represents the abandoned hallways and tension bathed air-ducts of her internal Nostromo as well as her pushback against a relentless foe.

Every LP to date has some meta-theme, and she is becoming increasingly psychoanalytical in her deliberations. Despite all its probing questions, ruminating, and cinematic flourish, Ms.

Wolfe's art is a gesture of "forward motion" that is practical and consequential in orientation. Her dramatic soundscapes boarder on a sort of idiopathic opera; thus, insight is afforded a palpable pulse.

What she finds is both a threatening rapture and a yearning for perspective. The instrumental composition expresses awe as much as it does apprehension.

Wolfe's art its power is the increasing poignancy of her vocabulary to articulate her visions and frustrations in a balanced and approachable way.

What's more, she creates visual art analogs via the medium of music. Simply put, everything about her tradecraft is seldom encountered elsewhere and carried out with such a fluent and grimacing grace.

Chiaroscuro, my friends, chiaroscuro Where many see darkness in Chelsea's music, i see blinding light as well This is a very doomy and dark album from Chelsea Wolfe.

While many of her earlier albums were more on the gothic side of things, this album is actually quite heavy.

This is the album where she really starts to experiment with the metal side of music. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of melody to the music and her voice is amazing, but this actually pretty heavy at times.

What makes Abyss truly work is its startling ability to turn moments of intense fragility and beauty to ones of complete despair and horror with considerable ease.

These tracks embrace the listener outright, but, as is apparent throughout the album, it is a feature that hazes in and out of intensity.

Thus, Abyss is fully immersed in its own atmosphere and grimacing sound, and thus it immerses the listener too. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.

Please try again. One of her best albums. I prefer some of her earlier doomy tracks but this is a solid album and a must for any fans.

Iron Moon is one of my favourite tracks and packs enough melancholy into the trawling bass line.

Overall a great album. It's so different and difficult to shoe-horn into a genre, other than 'dark' something, with beautiful overtones of 'something else'.

This is very doomy but has a beautiful bright thread of something from my childhood running through it all. Remember those dreams you used to have that you were being chased by formless black monsters?

They're here like familiar old friends because they were in someone else's dreams too. One person found this helpful. Absolutely love this.

Bought it after hearing part of one track on a tv programme. Love the whole album. Best cd I've bought in years. Will be buying more!

Band of the year i'm my opinion. For collectors of great music. She had an extraordinary case of sleep paralysis, and her parents took her to a sleep research clinic to be experimented on — an experience that has seeped into her music and lyrics, the white walls of the clinic as she remembers them provide the backdrop to the artwork for her previous album, 's Hiss Spun.

Her voice is more distinct and present than ever as she takes on the role of the troubadour, singing protrusively over a quietly strummed acoustic guitar while the sparse percussion thuds like footsteps from another room.

What was the catalyst for making this album? In order to find healthier ways to survive as a human being, I had to not play some shows for a while. How did you arrive at the title Birth of Violence?

At first when it was calling to me, it felt very much like an old book title. I used to work at a used bookstore in high school and I would spend most of my time perusing old books for cool covers and titles like Grapes of Wrath [and] Wuthering Heights.

Birth of Violence felt very much in that realm to me. So there was that element to it, but [also] Birth of Violence is a personal awakening, a personal strengthening and coming into my own as a woman.

When I looked up the word "violence" in my old dictionary, there was one definition that said "strength of emotion," and I thought that was really cool.

Again, I try to think of the word "violence" in a poetic way, like looking at a field of bright orange poppies and violent blue.

I might be getting ahead of myself here, but does this draw on your experience at the sleep clinic? No, actually that story came from a couple friends of mine who had to put their cat to sleep.

When they went to the vet there were two white owls and literally the moment the cat went to sleep the power went out in the neighborhood, so it was just a dramatic visual that stuck out to me.

I just wanted to honor my friends in that song. You brought up the sleep clinic, which the macro and micro is very much related to, because I struggled with nightmares and night terrors when I was a kid, and one of the recurring nightmares I would have would take place in a small room.

There would be an object in the middle of it, whether it was a book or a telephone or something, and it would grow really large, to the point where it was smashing against the wall, and then it would get really small, to the point where it was a tiny model.

It would happen back and forth over and over until I would wake up screaming because it would drive me insane. I think that weird perspective is exactly like the macro and micro — it just became a part of how I think.

So, for example, the song "Erde" — erde is the root word for Earth. It means "all dirt. All of us weird humans spending hours staring at screens and on the internet; abandoned cities.

Do you still have that relationship with death?

Great stuff - the track Maw is brilliant. My new favourite. An instant classic. Translate review to English. This was a first for me, After reading some reviews i gave Abyss a shot, new music and new artists always demand abit more than the same old same old.

Im no good in explaining why but Chelsea Wolfe is very old, she is sad, abandoned , hurt and lonely. Its a real downer to listen to her constant pain and struggle.

She writes intimately and personally she really does not like her own person. There could be a safe zone ahead, but its just a friend that died, again.

There is alot of mind put into the small lines of lyrics, If you have had a depression or a hard time for a long time, like her. I suggest you listen to this album.

Its a real party killer. Debbie downer, Nobody is going to laugh. Its a top class album. I honestly count this as one on the brightest hidden gems in music ive heard in a long time.

Some of her beats are second to none. A good example is "Grey Days". Di questo vinile sono uscite tre versioni: nero, azzurro opaco e blu splatter nero.
